Turkey Visa for Chinese Citizens 2026: Visa-Free Guide

By Turkey Residence Agency advisory team · Updated · 6 min read

Since 2 January 2026, Chinese citizens with an ordinary passport of the People's Republic of China can visit Turkey without a visa for tourism or transit, for up to 90 days in any 180-day period. Official passports and Hong Kong and Macao SAR passports have their own visa-free periods, while holders of Taiwan travel documents still need an e-Visa. Study, work, family reunion, business activities and long stays need a visa from a Turkish mission before travel and, after arrival, a residence permit.

Which travel document, which rule

The Turkish Ministry of Foreign Affairs' visa information page sets these rules for Chinese travellers:

Travel documentEntry ruleMaximum stayPoints to note
PRC ordinary passportVisa-free since 2 January 202690 days in any 180 daysTourism and transit only; not for work, study, business activities or long stays
PRC diplomatic, service and public affairs passportsVisa-free under the China-Turkey agreement in force since 198930 daysFor a longer stay, ask the Turkish mission before you travel
Hong Kong SAR passportVisa-free90 daysHolders of a Hong Kong Document of Identity need a visa from a Turkish mission
Macao SAR passportVisa-free30 daysA longer stay needs a visa or a residence permit
Taiwan travel documentse-Visa required (not visa-free)30 days per stayApply only at evisa.gov.tr; see below

The exemption for PRC ordinary passports comes from a presidential decree published in Turkey's Official Gazette on 31 December 2025 (see the Chinese Embassy in Türkiye notice). Türkiye's official tourism portal states that it does not cover employment, study, business activities or long-term residence (GoTürkiye). For official passports, see China's list of visa exemption agreements.

The 90/180 rule and passport validity

  • 90 days in any 180 days: on any day of your stay, the days spent in Turkey during the previous 180 days must not add up to more than 90. Leaving and coming back does not reset the count, and a second passport does not give you a second allowance (Turkish MFA).
  • Passport validity: Turkish law requires your passport to be valid for at least 60 days beyond the end of your permitted stay, which means about 150 days from entry for a full 90-day visit (Turkish MFA). The Chinese Embassy in Türkiye advises at least six months of validity and blank visa pages, which is the safer target.

Taiwan travel documents and the e-Visa

Holders of Taiwan travel documents are not visa-exempt. They apply online at evisa.gov.tr, the only official e-Visa website. Taiwan's consular authorities describe it as free and valid for multiple entries over six months, with up to 30 days per stay; the Turkish MFA summary describes a one-month e-Visa subject to conditions. Follow the terms evisa.gov.tr shows for your document, and carry a printed copy.

An e-Visa covers tourism and trade only; work and study visas are issued by Turkish embassies and consulates (e-Visa FAQ). Until 2026, PRC ordinary passport holders used a 30-day e-Visa for tourism and business. As the exemption does not cover business activities, business travellers should check on evisa.gov.tr whether an e-Visa is offered for their passport and purpose, or apply for a business visa at the mission.

When you need a visa from a Turkish mission in China

Apply for a visa before you travel if you plan to:

  • study at a Turkish university or school;
  • attend a Turkish language course;
  • work in Turkey;
  • join a family member who lives in Turkey;
  • carry out business activities, or stay longer than the visa-free period allows.

The general route:

  1. First obtain the document behind your purpose: a university acceptance letter, a language school enrolment letter, an employment contract or proof of the family relationship.
  2. Complete the online pre-application at visa.gov.tr, the Turkish MFA's system for visas that are not issued as e-Visas, and book your appointment as your mission instructs.
  3. Apply in person at the mission for the place where you live and work (not your hukou or the place your passport was issued): the Embassy in Beijing for most of mainland China; the Consulate General in Shanghai for Shanghai, Jiangsu, Zhejiang and Anhui; the Consulate General in Guangzhou for Guangdong, Fujian, Guangxi and Hainan; and the Consulate General in Hong Kong for residents of Hong Kong and Macao.
  4. Bring the documents on your mission's checklist. These commonly include the application form, photos, proof of funds, accommodation details and travel health insurance for the whole stay (the Guangzhou checklists set a minimum of EUR 30,000).
  5. For work, your employer applies for your work permit to Turkey's Ministry of Labour and Social Security. According to the Chinese consular service, this must happen within 10 working days of your application at the mission.

The Turkish missions in China say they have authorised no company to handle visa procedures for them: you apply in your own name. Consular districts can change, so check the embassy website first.

Staying longer: a residence permit, not an extension

A visa-free stay or an e-Visa cannot be extended. Anyone who will stay longer than their visa, visa exemption or 90 days must obtain a residence permit, according to the Presidency of Migration Management.

  • Apply online through e-ikamet before your visa-free period or visa ends, then attend your appointment at the provincial migration office. If you miss the appointment, the application is treated as never made.
  • The main types are short-term residence permits (for example for tourism or for a Turkish language course, which can be granted at most twice), student residence permits and family residence permits. A valid work permit also counts as a residence permit.
  • You need health insurance for the whole permit period, an address in Turkey and the documents listed for your permit type. Fees are shown when you apply; first-time applicants who entered visa-free may also pay a visa fee.
  • Overstaying leads to fines and can lead to an entry ban, depending on how long you overstayed (Migration Management).

Practical points for Chinese travellers

  • Passport valid for at least six months, with blank pages; keep a copy of the data page.
  • Carry a printed return ticket, hotel booking, itinerary and a physical bank card or other proof of funds. Border officers may ask for them, and they decide on entry.
  • Travel insurance is not listed as a condition of visa-free entry in the official notices, but it is strongly advisable. It is required for mission visas and for residence permits.
  • Money: use lawful bank channels, and ask your bank about the current rules for buying foreign currency and carrying cash abroad.
  • Apply for an e-Visa only on evisa.gov.tr. Lookalike websites charge extra fees.

Turkey Residence Agency can help you prepare your visa or residence permit documents (advisory only; you apply in your own name). See Turkish visa application or contact us.

Frequently asked questions

Do I still need an e-Visa with a PRC ordinary passport?

Not for tourism or transit. Since 2 January 2026 you can enter visa-free for up to 90 days in any 180 days. The exemption does not apply to business, study, work or family purposes.

Can I extend my 90-day visa-free stay?

No. Apply for a residence permit through e-ikamet before the visa-free period ends, or leave Turkey on time.

Can I enter visa-free and then start a university programme or language course?

The exemption covers tourism and transit only. The Chinese Embassy in Türkiye and GoTürkiye both say study needs the appropriate visa in advance, so obtain it from the Turkish mission first, then apply for the residence permit in Turkey.

Does leaving Turkey reset the 90 days?

No. The 180-day window rolls, so a short trip out of the country does not give you a new 90 days.

Where do Hong Kong and Macao residents apply for a Turkish visa?

At the Turkish Consulate General in Hong Kong, which covers both SARs. For short visits, their SAR passports are visa-free (90 days for Hong Kong, 30 days for Macao).

Rules checked in October 2026. They change, so confirm them with the Turkish Ministry of Foreign Affairs (including evisa.gov.tr) and the Turkish embassy or consulate that covers your area before you act.
